Transform the Australian food industry

Five (5) Strategic Australian Postgraduate Awards (STRAPAs) are available for eligible students to undertake postgraduate studies, as part of a University of Melbourne and Australian Research Council Industrial Transformation Hub Project titled ‘Unlocking the Food Value Chain: Australian food industry transformation for ASEAN markets’ (with a focus on confectionary).

APAs are available across faculties in the following project streams:

Sensory Analysis (2 APAs): Incorporating new tools in sensory analysis to enable experiments that manipulate the environment to answer questions of sensory influence of culture, behaviour and mood, informing product development.
Supervisors: Prof Frank Dunshea and Dr Sigfredo Fuentes, Faculty of Veterinary and Agricultural Sciences, Department of Agriculture and Food Systems

Customer Insights (1 APA): To gain an understanding of food consumption across Asian markets using psychological and marketing frameworks to enable Australia to expand export markets and presence in Asia.
Supervisors: Assoc Prof Angela Paladino, Faculty of Business and Economics, Department of Marketing and Management. Prof Yoshihisa Kashima, Melbourne School of Psychological Sciences.

Packaging Innovation (2 APAs): The program will conduct research into the development of novel polymeric food security devices in product packaging for Asia.
Supervisor: Prof Greg Qiao, School of Engineering, Department of Physics, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering.

Applicants should be outstanding graduates in their field. In addition, applicants must be Australian or New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents who meet the University of Melbourne’s requirements for Research Higher Degree candidature and the award of an Australian Postgraduate Award.

The successful applicants will be required to commence their candidature in 2015
